Self-help books, briefed, without the sneering

Fourteen self-help books in five points each. The genre gets more contempt than it deserves and makes bigger promises than it can keep, and both of those are worth saying plainly.

Two things are true at once

Self-help is easy to mock, and a well-timed book has genuinely redirected a lot of lives. It is also a genre built on a promise it structurally cannot keep: that reading will produce change. Reading produces the feeling of change, which is pleasant and is not the same thing, and the gap between the two is where the genre's bad reputation comes from.

What actually distinguishes the useful ones

Where the genre reliably oversteps

Self-help is written as though the constraint is always internal. Often it is not. Poverty, illness, caring responsibilities, discrimination and plain bad luck are not motivation problems, and a book that treats them as such quietly blames the reader for a situation they did not choose. Read the individual-agency framing as one lens, not as an account of why your life looks the way it does.

What to do with these briefs

Take the one behaviour the book is actually asking for and try it for a fortnight. If it helps, the book earned its place. If nothing changes, you learned that in two weeks instead of after three hundred pages and a vague sense of having improved.
