Productivity books, briefed. Most are one idea long

Twenty productivity books in five points each. The genre's open secret is that this is exactly the right length for a lot of them.

The genre where briefing is most honest

A large share of productivity books began as an essay, an article or a talk, and became a book because a book is what gets sold. The core idea is genuinely good and takes a page. What follows is case studies, restatements and encouragement.

Which means the five-point version of a productivity book is unusually close to the whole thing. That is a compliment to the ideas and not to the format.

The ones that survive compression badly

A minority in this genre are not one idea. They describe a system: a set of interlocking habits where each part depends on the others, and adopting half of it produces nothing. Capture-and-review methods are the clearest example. You can summarize the philosophy in a sentence and still be unable to run it, because the value is in the mechanics and the mechanics are the whole book.

If a brief here leaves you thinking "yes, but how", that is the signal it is one of these. Buy that one.
